Fri May 02 15:41:38 UTC 2025: ## Karnataka’s Unexpected Power Surplus Due to Unseasonal Rains
**Bengaluru, May 2, 2025** – Karnataka experienced lower-than-expected electricity demand in April due to unseasonal rains, according to the state’s Energy Department. The peak demand reached 17,330 megawatts (MW) on April 2nd, significantly lower than the projected 18,500-19,000 MW. This contrasts sharply with February and March’s record highs of 18,350 MW and 18,395 MW, respectively.
The unexpected surplus is attributed to widespread rainfall across the state, reducing air conditioning usage and agricultural power needs. This is particularly evident in Bengaluru, where Bescom’s peak demand in April 2025 was 8,233 MW, down from 8,381 MW in April 2024.
The state had previously arranged power procurement agreements with Punjab and Uttar Pradesh to manage anticipated high demand. Now, with the surplus, the Energy Department plans to sell excess power at higher rates in the open market, particularly targeting the northern states where peak demand is expected in May and June. However, officials acknowledge the unpredictable nature of the weather and plan to retain a power reserve to ensure sufficient supply within Karnataka. Gaurav Gupta, Additional Chief Secretary, Energy Department, emphasized that while some May rainfall is anticipated, the possibility of a dry spell remains, necessitating a cautious approach.
