Fri May 02 17:55:00 UTC 2025: ## Coimbatore NGO Fights Commercialization of Beautified City Tanks
**COIMBATORE, INDIA (May 3, 2025)** – A Coimbatore-based NGO, Osai, is urging local authorities to halt plans to rent out spaces around city tanks beautified under the Smart Cities Mission for commercial events. The NGO argues that these water bodies, crucial habitats for a diverse range of birds, including migratory species, are threatened by the proposed commercialization.
In a petition submitted to the District Collector, Corporation Commissioner, and District Forest Officer, Osai highlighted the potential negative impact of events on the delicate ecosystem. Noise, lighting, crowds, and waste generated from such events, the NGO contends, could severely disrupt the birds’ breeding and feeding patterns, potentially leading to population declines. The petition specifically names several tanks, including Valankulam, Ukkadam Big Tank, and Kurichi tank, as vital habitats for over 200 bird species, representing over 15% of India’s bird species.
Osai emphasizes the ecological significance of these wetlands, which, due to urbanization, have become crucial refuges for various species. Instead of commercial use, the NGO proposes designating these areas as Urban Biodiversity Conservation Zones and Ecological Learning and Conservation Education Centres. They urge authorities to consult with ecological experts before implementing any further plans. The petition is supported by detailed bird population reports for several tanks in the area.
