Thu May 01 22:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Newark Airport Faces Massive Delays Due to FAA Staffing Shortages

**NEWARK, NJ** – Passengers flying in and out of Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) are facing significant delays Thursday due to ongoing FAA staffing shortages and equipment issues. As of 10 a.m., the FAA reported average delays of 75 minutes for departing flights and a staggering five hours for arriving flights, with some delays potentially reaching up to 10 hours.

The FAA implemented a ground delay program shortly after 11 a.m. Earlier in the morning, equipment issues at the Philadelphia TRACON center, which manages airspace around Newark, further exacerbated the situation, impacting early morning flights. This comes after similar delays earlier this week due to FAA challenges. Ongoing runway construction at EWR, limiting operations to a single runway at times, is also contributing to the backlog.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which manages the airport, is working with airlines and the FAA to mitigate the impact and assist affected passengers. However, travelers are strongly urged to check with their respective airlines for the latest flight status updates before departing for the airport.
