**Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, May 2, 2025** – Mango season is underway in Tiruchirappalli, with growers and sellers predicting a bumper harvest. Favorable weather conditions, including fruit-setting completed before the onset of high temperatures, have contributed to positive expectations. Approximately 2,000 hectares of land in the district are dedicated to mango cultivation, primarily producing Bangloora, Baganapalli, Senthoora, and Imam Pasand varieties.
While current mango arrivals are low, officials from the Department of Horticulture and Plantation Crops anticipate a significant increase in the coming weeks. Yields are expected to average 8-10 tonnes per hectare, with Marungapuri block contributing half the total. Newer farmers are increasingly cultivating Imam Pasand and other less common varieties.
Currently, Baganapalli mangoes are priced at ₹50 per kilogram, and Senthoora at ₹45 per kilogram. Consumers report that while some mangoes appear appealing, their sweetness is lacking, possibly due to the early stage of the season. Many are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Imam Pasand, known for its optimal sweetness and texture.
Traders at Gandhi Market, which houses approximately 30 wholesalers and over 200 retailers dealing in mangoes, are also optimistic. They currently receive around 10 tonnes daily, expecting this volume to significantly increase in the coming months. The market president, A. M. P. Abdul Hakkim, suggests that a cold storage facility would greatly benefit the industry, enabling better planning and maximizing profits from the anticipated abundant harvest.
