**Kolar, Karnataka –** A 21-year-old man, Karthik, recently died after consuming five full bottles of liquor in a bet with friends. The incident occurred in Mulbagal, Kolar district, resulting in the arrest of two of his friends and a police investigation into the tragic event.
Karthik reportedly wagered with Venkata Reddy and Subramani, along with three others, that he could drink five bottles of liquor without diluting it with water. Reddy offered a ₹10,000 reward if Karthik succeeded. After completing the challenge, Karthik fell critically ill and was admitted to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Adding to the tragedy, Karthik was married and his wife had given birth to their child just eight days prior.
Police have filed a case against all six individuals involved at the Nangali police station. Reddy and Subramani are currently under arrest, while the police are searching for the remaining four.
The incident highlights the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 2.6 million deaths annually are attributable to alcohol, representing 4.7% of global deaths. The WHO emphasizes that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption, refuting any claims of a “safe” drinking threshold. A recent WHO report further states that any potential benefits from moderate alcohol intake are outweighed by the increased risk of cancer. Dr. Carina Ferreira-Borges, acting Unit Lead for Noncommunicable Disease Management at the WHO Regional Office for Europe, stressed that the risk to health begins with the very first drink and increases with consumption.
