Thu May 01 23:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Golden Knights Steal Game 5, Push Wild to Brink of Elimination

**LAS VEGAS —** The Vegas Golden Knights staved off elimination, defeating the Minnesota Wild 3-2 in overtime Tuesday night to take a commanding 3-2 series lead in their Western Conference first-round matchup. Brett Howden’s overtime goal, assisted by Tanner Pearson, secured the victory and sent the series back to St. Paul for a crucial Game 6 on Thursday.

The game was a rollercoaster. With under two minutes remaining in regulation, Ryan Hartman appeared to score the game-winning goal for the Wild. However, after a successful Vegas challenge, the goal was overturned due to an offside call against Gustav Nyquist. This dramatic reversal breathed new life into the Golden Knights, sending the game to overtime.

“It saved our (butt),” said Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy, referring to the successful challenge.

William Karlsson and Mark Stone also scored for Vegas, while Jack Eichel contributed two assists after a quiet start to the series. Adin Hill made 20 saves in net. For Minnesota, Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy found the back of the net, with Kaprizov extending his point streak to five games. The Wild’s goaltending situation was fluid; starter Filip Gustavsson left the game due to illness, replaced by former Golden Knight Marc-Andre Fleury, who made his playoff appearances for 18 years, setting a new record for goalies.

The Wild, who could have closed out the series earlier, now face elimination. “The game was another 50-50 game,” said Wild coach John Hynes. “It’s the playoffs. Sometimes it goes well for you and sometimes it doesn’t.”

The Golden Knights, boasting the second-best record in the Pacific Division this season, are one win away from their fifth second-round appearance in their eight-year history. Their win continues a remarkable playoff streak; Vegas is now 41-0 in playoff games where they score three or more goals. The Wild, meanwhile, aim to avoid another early exit, having not advanced past the first round since 2015.
