Fri May 02 06:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Real ID Deadline Looms: Airport Delays Expected for Unprepared Travelers
**CHICAGO, IL –** With less than a week until the May 7th Real ID deadline, officials are warning air travelers in Illinois to obtain compliant identification or face potential delays and extra security screenings at airports. Failure to present a Real ID-compliant driver’s license, state-issued ID, or an acceptable alternative like a passport could result in denied boarding.
Illinois Federal Security Director Jim Spriggs announced Wednesday that passengers without proper identification should expect unpredictable delays, possibly involving rerouting to separate screening areas. To mitigate potential delays, Spriggs urged domestic travelers to arrive at the airport two hours prior to their flight and international travelers three hours in advance. Travelers under 18 are exempt from the Real ID requirement.
While other forms of identification are currently accepted, full enforcement of the Real ID Act, potentially denying access without a Real ID, will begin no later than May 2027. Those with compliant identification should experience minimal disruption. The same Real ID requirements will also apply to most federal facilities in Illinois.
