**NEW DELHI, May 2, 2025** – A long-lost masterpiece by Italian Baroque painter Caravaggio, “Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy,” is captivating art lovers in Delhi. The painting, believed to have been lost for centuries, is on display at the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA) in Saket until May 18th, marking its first-ever exhibition in India.
The painting, created in 1606 while Caravaggio was in exile, depicts Mary Magdalene in a moment of profound spiritual transcendence. Chief Curator Roobina Karode described Caravaggio’s work as bringing “art closer to the ground and to people’s lived experiences,” highlighting his masterful use of light and shadow to evoke raw human emotion. The rediscovery of the painting in 2014 was hailed as a miracle by art historians.
Italian Ambassador Antonio Bartoli praised the exhibition as a rare opportunity to witness the work of one of the Baroque era’s most influential artists. He noted Caravaggio’s revolutionary approach, incorporating real-life models and cinematic lighting techniques. Visitors have described the experience as profoundly moving and spiritually enriching.
Kiran Nadar, founder of KNMA, emphasized the painting’s ability to bridge cultures and connect audiences with a legacy that has captivated generations. The exhibition offers Delhi’s art connoisseurs a unique chance to engage with a piece of history and reflect on the universality of human emotion. The exhibition runs from 10:30 am to 6:30 pm daily until May 18th.
