**BOURNE, MA** – A planned burn at Joint Base Cape Cod spiraled out of control Thursday afternoon, sending a large plume of grey smoke billowing into the sky and prompting a massive response from local and state fire departments. While the fire originated within a designated burn area intended for forest fire mitigation, officials confirmed the flames spread beyond its boundaries, remaining contained within the base property.
The Massachusetts National Guard confirmed the incident and stated that out of an abundance of caution, local fire departments were called in to assist base personnel in extinguishing the blaze. Firefighters from across Cape Cod responded, with requests for aerial support also submitted. The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services activated the Statewide Fire Mobilization Plan, bringing in additional resources and deploying a rehabilitation unit to support exhausted crews. The smoke was visible for miles, captured on camera by NBC affiliate WJAR in New Bedford. The situation remains under control, though the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
