Thu May 01 22:53:00 UTC 2025: ## Andhra Pradesh Faces Above-Normal Temperatures, But Fewer Heatwaves Expected in May
**Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh – May 2, 2025** – Andhra Pradesh is expected to experience above-normal maximum and minimum temperatures in May, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). However, the number of heatwave days is predicted to be lower than average, offering some relief after the state endured severe heatwaves in March and April.
The IMD’s Monthly Temperature and Rainfall Outlook, released April 30th, forecasts above-normal temperatures for most of India, with Andhra Pradesh falling within this prediction, though the probability is moderate (33.5% to 65%). While thunderstorms and gusty winds are anticipated until May 7th, temperatures are expected to rise significantly after May 8th. IMD Amaravati Director S. Stella clarified that while hot and humid conditions will persist, the likelihood of temperatures exceeding normal by more than 4 degrees Celsius—a key factor in declaring a heatwave—is low this month.
Despite the temperature forecast, parts of South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema received light to moderate rainfall on Thursday, with Srisakthi Bhavan in Prakasam district recording the highest rainfall of 54 mm. The A.P. State Disaster Management Authority has urged residents to exercise caution due to thunderstorms and strong winds.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has also taken note of the high temperatures across several Indian states. On May 1st, the NHRC wrote to the Chief Secretaries of eleven states, including Andhra Pradesh, requesting immediate action to protect vulnerable populations from the heat. This includes providing shelters, relief materials, adjusting working hours, and ensuring readily available procedures for treating heat-related illnesses.
