Thu May 01 11:54:25 UTC 2025: ## Sivaganga Hospital Faces Health Threat from Nearby Burning Dump
**Sivaganga, May 1, 2025** – A municipal dump yard located near the Government Medical College Hospital in Sivaganga, Tamil Nadu, is causing serious health concerns for patients and residents. The Sivaganga municipality, which generates 13.8 tonnes of waste daily, has repeatedly shifted its dump site due to public protests, finally settling near the hospital bypass. The municipality’s inefficient waste management system leads to the burning of garbage, including medical waste and plastics, releasing toxic smoke directly into the hospital.
A doctor at the hospital, located just 100 meters from the dump, expressed serious concerns about the compromised health of patients exposed to the smoke. The problem is expected to worsen with the upcoming merger of two panchayats into the municipality, potentially doubling the waste volume.
Hospital authorities have urged the municipality to relocate the dump site, a request the municipality claims it is actively pursuing. However, the ongoing burning of waste near the hospital highlights the urgent need for a more sustainable and efficient waste management solution in Sivaganga.
