Thu May 01 16:24:46 UTC 2025: ## US to Sell $131 Million Maritime Surveillance System to India, Boosting Quad Initiative

**New Delhi, May 1, 2025** – The United States is poised to significantly bolster India’s maritime security capabilities through a $131 million sale of the Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness (IPMDA) system, a key component of the Quad alliance’s initiative. The deal, approved by the U.S. State Department and announced by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), includes SeaVision software, training, and support.

The IPMDA system, launched by the Quad (India, Australia, Japan, and the US) in 2022, aims to enhance real-time monitoring of maritime activity across the Indo-Pacific, combating “dark shipping” and improving regional security. The sale will provide India with enhanced analytical capabilities and a stronger strategic posture. The DSCA noted that the sale strengthens the U.S.-India strategic relationship and improves the security of a key defense partner crucial for regional stability and economic progress.

The primary contractor for the sale is Hawkeye 360, based in Virginia. While an offset agreement isn’t currently planned, it remains a possibility during negotiations. The final cost may be lower depending on India’s final requirements.

The IPMDA system has already undergone successful pilot testing in a Quad nation. A full-scale launch is imminent, according to officials. Indian Navy Chief Admiral R. Hari Kumar previously highlighted the system’s importance in ensuring safe sea lines of communication and promoting cooperation among regional partners. This sale marks a significant step towards realizing the ambitious goals of the Quad initiative and strengthening maritime security in the Indo-Pacific.
