Thu May 01 08:10:04 UTC 2025: ## Karnataka City Pioneers Waste-to-Energy Initiative

**Mangaluru, Karnataka – May 1, 2025** – The Puttur City Municipal Council in Dakshina Kannada district is leading the way in sustainable waste management in Karnataka. Since August 2024, the council has been successfully converting wet waste into Bio Compressed Natural Gas (BioCNG) to power its six municipal vehicles.

This innovative project, a collaboration with Krishna Muliya Green Energy LLP under a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) model, has already produced over 24,000 kg of BioCNG. The plant, located in Bannur, processes approximately 10 tonnes of the city’s daily 12-tonne wet waste output, with the remaining waste used for composting. The plant currently produces 200-250 kg of BioCNG daily, with a target of 350 kg.

Krishna Muliya Green Energy LLP, motivated by social responsibility rather than profit, is now preparing to sell surplus BioCNG to other consumers. The project, supported by Retap Solutions Private Limited for technical solutions, is hailed as a first-of-its-kind initiative among urban local bodies in Karnataka. The municipality reports receiving inquiries from other cities interested in replicating this successful model. The initiative significantly reduces reliance on fossil fuels and mitigates environmental issues associated with improper waste disposal. After 40 years, the plant will be transferred to the municipality.
