**Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir – May 1, 2025** – The Indian Army reported retaliatory fire after Pakistan initiated unprovoked small-arms fire across the Line of Control (LoC) for the seventh consecutive night. The incidents, occurring overnight between April 30th and May 1st, targeted areas opposite Kupwara, Uri, and Akhnoor in Jammu and Kashmir. Similar skirmishes also took place in the Naushera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor sectors, as well as along the International Border (IB) in the Pargwal sector. The Indian Army stated its response was proportionate in all instances.
These escalating tensions follow a Pahalgam terror attack on April 22nd, which killed 26 people, mostly tourists. India’s subsequent suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty appears to have triggered the increased cross-border firing. While the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan held a scheduled hotline conversation on Tuesday, India issued a warning to Pakistan regarding the unprovoked violations. The 2003 ceasefire agreement, largely upheld until the Pahalgam attack, is now severely strained.
