**Mumbai, May 2, 2025** – The Mahayuti government in Maharashtra is facing strong criticism from opposition parties over its 100-day performance report, released on Maharashtra Day. While Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis highlighted the achievement of 78% of strategic targets across 48 departments, opposition leaders dismissed the report as superficial and out of touch with ground realities.
The Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Ambadas Danve, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, sharply criticized the report, citing a significant rise in farmer suicides as evidence of the government’s failure to address rural distress. He pointed to official data showing 269 farmer suicides in Marathwada between January and March 2025, a considerable increase compared to the same period last year. Danve also condemned what he called the government’s reliance on divisive rhetoric and unfulfilled promises, including loan waivers.
Danve’s criticism focused on the discrepancy between the government’s positive self-assessment and the reported increase in farmer suicides and lack of relief for rural communities. He further accused the government of prioritizing populist measures over substantive solutions to the ongoing agricultural crisis. The government’s report, meanwhile, claimed that 12 departments achieved all their targets, while others reported varying levels of success.
The clash highlights the growing tension between the ruling Mahayuti coalition and the opposition in Maharashtra, with the issue of rural distress and farmer suicides serving as a key point of contention. The debate is likely to continue as the opposition presses for greater accountability and tangible measures to address the concerns of the state’s farming community.
