Thu May 01 12:25:31 UTC 2025: ## Kurdish Leader Warns of Salafi Regime in Syria, Calls for Decentralization
**Damascus, Syria –** Salih Muslim Muhammad, co-chairman of Syria’s Democratic Union Party (PYD), has warned of the growing threat of a Salafi regime in Syria following the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group’s seizure of power in Damascus. In an exclusive interview with The Hindu, Mr. Muslim expressed concern over HTS’s aim to establish a centralized government, contrasting it with the Kurdish desire for a decentralized, democratic Syria.
Mr. Muslim detailed the rapid takeover of Damascus by HTS, highlighting the group’s jihadist origins and its history of conflict with Kurdish forces. He noted a recent ceasefire agreement between the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces and HTS, but expressed skepticism about HTS’s commitment to democratic reforms. He emphasized that Syria’s diverse population, including Alawites, Druze, and Kurds, are united in their opposition to a centralized regime and seek greater autonomy.
The interview also addressed the resurgence of ISIS in Syria, with Mr. Muslim stating that the group, though driven underground, remains a significant threat. He highlighted the ongoing challenges posed by ISIS remnants in various regions and the security concerns surrounding the Al-Hawl camp housing ISIS families and the thousands of ISIS prisoners held by Kurdish forces.
Regarding Turkey’s role, Mr. Muslim accused the Turkish government of “Kurdopobia” and hindering peace efforts. He denied any links between the PYD and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), while expressing hope that recent peace overtures by PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan will lead to regional stability.
Finally, Mr. Muslim addressed the relationship between the Kurdish Autonomous Administration and Israel, stating that while there are no formal ties, recent communication between their foreign affairs officials suggests potential future cooperation. He also condemned the ongoing conflict in Gaza, advocating for dialogue and a democratic solution. He expressed support for a single, democratic nation in the region encompassing Arabs and Jews, emphasizing the importance of mutual acceptance and coexistence.
