**NEW YORK** – The New York Mets are facing a significant bullpen shortage after placing left-handed reliever Danny Young on the injured list Wednesday with an elbow sprain. This leaves the team without a single left-handed reliever, following the earlier injury to A.J. Minter.
Young’s move, retroactive to Sunday, comes just three days after Minter landed on the IL with a lat strain. Minter’s injury is so severe that he is considering season-ending surgery. A second MRI was conducted Wednesday, and a decision on surgery versus rest and rehabilitation is expected in a few days. Minter’s absence is a considerable blow; the 31-year-old signed a two-year, $22 million contract this offseason and had posted a 1.64 ERA before his injury.
Young, also 31, pitched effectively before his injury, recording a 4.32 ERA in 10 games. Veteran right-hander Chris Devenski has been called up to replace Young on the active roster.
Manager Carlos Mendoza expressed confidence in the remaining right-handed relievers, stating that they have performed well against left-handed hitters this season (.226 batting average, .698 OPS against in 179 plate appearances). However, the lack of a lefty specialist will undoubtedly create a platoon disadvantage in late-game situations.
