**Thrissur, Kerala – May 1, 2025** – Mallika Sarabhai, renowned dancer, activist, and Chancellor of Kerala Kalamandalam Deemed-to-be University, has publicly accused unnamed individuals of attempting to restrict her freedom of speech since assuming her new position.
In a Facebook post, Ms. Sarabhai revealed that she faced apparent pressure to refrain from expressing support for striking ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers in Thrissur who are protesting for better wages and working conditions. Ms. Sarabhai voiced her strong support for the workers, highlighting their critical yet underpaid role. She also publicized a crowdfunding initiative by writer and activist Sarah Joseph aimed at supporting the workers’ cause, an initiative in which Ms. Sarabhai was slated to participate.
The alleged censorship attempt followed Ms. Sarabhai’s public endorsement of the ASHA workers’ demands. She questioned the limitations imposed on her ability to express her personal views, a right she has exercised throughout her career.
A leader of the protesting ASHA workers condemned the alleged censorship and expressed hope that Ms. Sarabhai would still participate in their online protest scheduled for Thursday evening. Neither the Kerala state government nor the university authorities have yet commented on the allegations. Ms. Sarabhai’s appointment as Chancellor was made in December 2022.
