Wed Apr 30 19:06:39 UTC 2025: ## Pollachi Tall Coconut Seeks Geographical Indication Tag
**Chennai, May 1, 2025** – Producers of the highly sought-after Pollachi Tall Coconut, a variety known for its large size and high water content, have applied for a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. The application, facilitated by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and others, aims to protect the authenticity of this coconut, a major crop in the Pollachi region of Tamil Nadu.
The Pollachi Tall Coconut, which grows to heights of 50-60 feet, is renowned for its superior copra and oil yield and is exported to countries including Singapore and those in the Middle East. The application was submitted by four producer companies representing over 2,600 farmers, each cultivating an average of 70 trees on 10 acres of land.
Obtaining the GI tag is expected to increase farmer awareness, enhance the value of the coconut and its by-products, and boost market recognition, according to producer company representatives. The successful cultivation of the coconut in the region is largely attributed to the Aliyar Dam, built in 1959 as part of the Parambikulam-Aliyar Project, which provides reliable irrigation. The project’s completion significantly increased coconut cultivation in the area, transforming it into a major coconut farming hub.
