Thu May 01 06:09:38 UTC 2025: **Former South Korean President Faces New Indictment Amidst Political Turmoil**

SEOUL, South Korea – Former President Yoon Suk-yeol is facing a new indictment for abuse of authority, adding to the ongoing insurrection charges against him, Yonhap news agency reported Thursday. This latest development further complicates the already volatile political landscape ahead of South Korea’s snap presidential election on June 3rd.

Yoon’s initial indictment in January, while still in office, charged him with leading an insurrection following his brief, six-hour imposition of martial law last December. This decree saw armed soldiers deployed to parliament before being swiftly overturned by opposition MPs. Subsequent impeachment proceedings led to Yoon’s removal from office in April by the Constitutional Court.

The new abuse of authority charge comes a day after investigators raided Yoon’s residence as part of a bribery probe involving his wife. If convicted on the insurrection charge, Yoon faces a potential life sentence or death penalty, although executions are rare in South Korea.

The political uncertainty extends beyond Yoon. The Supreme Court overturned a lower court ruling that cleared presidential frontrunner Lee Jae-myung of election law violations, casting doubt on his eligibility to run. Lee, the Democratic Party’s candidate, maintains he will abide by the people’s will.

Adding to the upheaval, acting leader Han Duck-soo resigned, paving the way for Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok to assume the role. The upcoming election promises to be highly contested, with Lee currently holding a significant lead in opinion polls.
