**New Delhi, May 1, 2025** – The BJP today accused the Congress party of hypocrisy over the government’s decision to conduct a caste census alongside the decennial census. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan stated that the Congress’ claim of influencing the decision was disingenuous, highlighting the party’s historical opposition to caste-based enumeration.
Pradhan argued that the Congress’ alleged change of heart revealed a disparity between “empty slogans and true intentions.” He questioned the Congress’ actions during its time in power, emphasizing that the party never conducted a caste census despite opportunities. He further claimed that Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, was strongly opposed to caste-based reservations, contrasting Nehru’s stance with the contributions of B.R. Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi in establishing reservation policies.
The Minister also pointed to the Janata Party government’s establishment of the Mandal Commission in 1977, a commission BJP’s predecessor, the Jana Sangh, was a part of. He criticized the delay in implementing the Mandal Commission report, questioning the Congress’ commitment to social justice. Pradhan concluded by alleging that the Congress party has consistently opposed the interests of marginalized communities.
