Wed Apr 30 19:21:15 UTC 2025: ## Tamil Nadu Receives ₹2,851 Crore for MGNREGS After Months-Long Delay
**Chennai, May 1, 2025** – The Union Ministry of Rural Development has finally released ₹2,851 crore to Tamil Nadu to settle outstanding wage liabilities under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). This payment addresses arrears accumulated during the 2024-25 fiscal year, ending a months-long impasse that saw protests and accusations from the state government.
The total allocation from the Union Ministry amounts to ₹2,999 crore, including funds for the current year. The released funds will benefit Scheduled Castes (₹740 crore), Scheduled Tribes (₹43 crore), and other beneficiaries (₹2,068 crore). While the state has received ₹1,111 crore, material component arrears of ₹1,246 crore remain outstanding and are expected to be addressed by the Union government.
The delay in payments sparked widespread concern among beneficiaries and the Tamil Nadu government, led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. Mr. Stalin had previously criticized the BJP-led Union government, alleging attempts to dismantle the scheme. Protests, including road blockades and work stoppages, occurred across the state to pressure for the release of funds.
The MGNREGS in Tamil Nadu employs nearly 91 lakh workers from 76 lakh households, with 86% being women and 29% from SC/ST households. Approximately 1 lakh differently-abled workers participate annually. The state government has now circulated a proforma agenda to all Collectors for discussion at Gram Sabha meetings on May Day.
