Thu May 01 09:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Banks Closed in Several States Today for Labour Day and Maharashtra Day

**Mumbai, May 1, 2025** – Banks across several states in India are closed today, May 1st, 2025, in observance of Labour Day and Maharashtra Day. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has declared a holiday in numerous cities, including Belapur, Bengaluru, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh & Telangana), Imphal, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji, Patna, Raipur, and Thiruvananthapuram. The closure is impacting banking operations significantly, especially in Maharashtra, where the state holiday further contributes to the disruption.

While physical bank branches are closed, online banking services remain fully operational. Customers can access NEFT/RTGS fund transfers, debit/credit card services, and other digital banking functions.

Labour Day, internationally celebrated on May 1st, commemorates the rights and contributions of workers worldwide. The day’s origins lie in the labour union movement’s push for the “eight-hour day” – eight hours of work, eight hours of rest, and eight hours for recreation.

Maharashtra Day, also observed on May 1st, marks the formation of the state of Maharashtra in 1960, following the division of the Bombay State based on linguistic and cultural lines.

While the RBI guidelines outline the closures, citizens are advised to confirm the operating status of their local bank branches, as holiday schedules may vary.
