**CHENNAI, INDIA (April 29, 2025)** – A recent article in *The Hindu* newspaper explains the scientific reason behind why wet clothes appear darker than when dry. The explanation, submitted by readers G. Meena Rajeshwari and G. Sivaramakrishna, centers on light reflection and scattering.
When clothes are dry, the surface irregularities cause diffused white light to mix with the light reflecting the cloth’s color, resulting in a lighter appearance. However, when wet, water fills these irregularities, minimizing light scattering. This allows the color of the cloth to be reflected more purely, making it appear darker. The effect is particularly noticeable in cotton clothes due to their loosely packed fibers and increased surface area. Synthetic and silk clothes show less of this effect because of their smoother surfaces and lower water absorption.
