Wed Apr 30 07:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Top Telangana Official Removed from Miss World Duties Amidst Land Dispute Controversy
**Hyderabad, India** – Smita Sabharwal, the Principal Secretary for Youth Affairs, Tourism, and Culture in Telangana, has been transferred from her post just weeks before Hyderabad hosts the 72nd Miss World pageant. The move comes amidst a controversy surrounding a planned land sale near Hyderabad Central University.
Sabharwal, a key figure in promoting Telangana’s tourism ahead of the international event, was reportedly removed following a public disagreement with the newly elected Congress government over the proposed sale of 400 acres of land in Kancha Gachibowli. Environmentalists and students oppose the sale, citing the area’s ecological sensitivity.
The Congress government, led by Revanth Reddy, reportedly ordered a reshuffle of several senior officials Sunday night, including Sabharwal. She will now serve as Member Secretary of the Telangana Finance Commission. Other officials affected by the reshuffle include the MCR HRD Institute Director General, IT and Sports department Special Chief Secretary, and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Commissioner.
Sabharwal, a 2001-batch IAS officer, had been instrumental in promoting Telangana’s tourism, focusing on its cultural heritage and handloom industry. Her recent social media post featuring an AI-generated image may also have contributed to the decision.
The Miss World pageant, scheduled for May 7-31, is expected to attract participants from 140 countries. The transfer of Sabharwal, who played a crucial role in preparing for the event, raises questions about potential disruptions to the preparations.
