Wed Apr 30 00:50:00 UTC 2025: **Eight Pilgrims Killed as Wall Collapses at Simhachalam Temple**
VISAKHAPATNAM, INDIA – Eight pilgrims died and four were seriously injured when a wall collapsed at the Simhachalam temple in Visakhapatnam district, Andhra Pradesh, following heavy rainfall. The incident occurred late Tuesday night as pilgrims waited in a queue for entry, which cost ₹300.
The wall, located near a shopping complex on the route from Simhagiri bus stand to the temple, gave way due to torrential rain and strong winds. The victims included three women and five men. The injured are receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.
Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Vangaveeti Anita, Visakhapatnam District Collector A. Harirendra Prasad, and CP Shankhabrata Bagchi rushed to the scene to oversee rescue and relief efforts. The NDRF also assisted in the rescue operation. The bodies of the deceased have been transported to KG Hospital in Visakhapatnam.
The collapse occurred during the temple’s Chandanotsavam festival, where devotees gather to witness the deity’s “Nijarupa darshan” (unveiling of the deity). The temple had seen a large influx of pilgrims in anticipation of this event. The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the otherwise joyous festival.
