**Bengaluru, April 30, 2025** – A rejuvenated recharge well in Gollahalli village, Bengaluru, is providing much-needed relief from water scarcity, offering a sustainable solution to the area’s water woes. The project, implemented under the Central Government’s AMRUT 2.0 scheme with the help of the Biome Environmental Trust, has transformed a 50-year-old, garbage-filled well into a vital water source.
Drawing water from depths of 15 to 100 feet, the well now serves over 50 homes, shops, a temple, and a public toilet, providing an alternative to over-stressed borewells. The well replenishes every 48 hours, ensuring a reliable water supply. Local resident Renuka, dubbed the “Water Woman,” manages the well’s daily operations, running the motor from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Her dedication has earned her local acclaim.
The initiative received support from local corporator K. Somashekar, who provided essential pipes and motors. Villagers report a significant improvement in their water access, stating that the well now meets their daily needs, unlike the previously insufficient borewell water.
With a 5 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) under construction and plans to revive two more wells, Gollahalli village is looking towards a more secure water future. The success of this project highlights the potential of community-based water management initiatives in addressing water scarcity in urban areas.
