Wed Apr 30 09:24:08 UTC 2025: ## Local Filmmaker’s “Seeing Red” Explores Feminist Rage Through Slapstick Satire
**MUMBAI, INDIA – April 30, 2025** – Shalini Vijayakumar’s short film, “Seeing Red,” a slapstick satire exploring feminist rage within a traditional 1980s Indian household, is gaining significant online traction. The 30-minute film, shot entirely on an iPhone 16 Pro Max and selected for MAMI Select: Filmed on iPhone, uses the comedic trope of a ghost visible only to the women to highlight the systemic oppression they face.
Vijayakumar, inspired by her own family experiences and the writings of Bell Hooks, uses humor to disarm viewers before delivering a powerful message about unprocessed anger and the exploitation of women’s labor. The film depicts men reacting to the women’s attempts to assert themselves with “benevolent chauvinism,” a theme Vijayakumar argues transcends specific communities and is inherent in power structures.
The film, featuring an ensemble cast including Badava Gopi, was shot in just four days and mentored by acclaimed director Vetrimaaran. Its YouTube release has already garnered nearly 500,000 views, sparking widespread discussion and debate online. Vijayakumar, who co-wrote the film with her partner, hopes to showcase “Seeing Red” at more film festivals and is already developing new projects. She credits the film’s success to the audience’s keen observation and insightful feedback.
