**MUMBAI, INDIA (April 30, 2025)** – Deven Bharti, a 1994-batch IPS officer, has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Police for Mumbai, succeeding Vivek Phansalkar who retired after 35 years of service. Bharti, currently serving as the city’s Special Commissioner of Police, will assume his new role later today.
The State Home Department issued an order announcing the appointment, but notably downgraded the commissioner’s position from the Director General of Police (DGP) rank to Additional Director General of Police (ADGP). While historically a post of ADGP rank, it had been elevated to DGP in recent years.
Bharti brings extensive experience to the role, having served the Mumbai police force in various capacities including Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime), and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime). His career also includes leading the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and serving as Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) at the state police headquarters. He has also served on central deputation.
Known for his investigative prowess, Bharti participated in high-profile cases, including the investigation into the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.
