Tue Apr 29 18:20:00 UTC 2025: ## DTE Energy Seeks $574 Million Rate Hike, Sparking Outrage from Activists
**DETROIT, MI –** DTE Energy has requested a $574 million rate increase from the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC), a move that would result in an 11% hike for residential customers. The utility company claims the increase is necessary to fund improvements to grid reliability. However, the proposal has drawn fierce opposition from activists who argue the increase will disproportionately burden low-income residents.
The Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition is among the groups voicing concern. Activist Dennis Black, who has personally experienced power outages, stated that the rate hike will place an “undue financial burden” on Detroiters with fixed incomes, potentially leading to increased power shutoffs. While DTE claims a 70% improvement in outage time in 2024 compared to 2023, Black counters that this progress hasn’t been universally felt. He cited a recent personal experience with an outage on a clear day.
DTE’s application was filed on April 24, 2025, and the MPSC has ten months to review and decide on the request. The commission may approve the full amount, a portion of it, or reject it entirely. MPSC spokesperson Matt Helms stated that they cannot comment during the review process.
Activists are urging residents to contact their legislators and the MPSC to voice their opposition to the proposed rate increase. They argue that while DTE cites infrastructure improvements, many customers continue to experience unreliable service. The outcome of the MPSC’s review remains to be seen, but the debate highlights the tension between the need for grid modernization and the affordability of electricity for all Michigan residents.
