**Imphal, Manipur –** Twenty-one Manipur MLAs have appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to reinstate a popularly elected government in the state, currently under President’s Rule. The letter, signed by members from the BJP, NPP, Naga Peoples’ Front, and independent legislators, expresses concern that the three months since the imposition of President’s Rule following widespread ethnic violence have yielded insufficient progress towards peace and normalcy.
The MLAs cite rising public apprehension and protests against the President’s Rule, with civil organizations demanding the formation of a new government. They argue that only a popularly elected government can effectively address the ongoing crisis and restore peace between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. The letter, dated April 10th and received by the Ministry of Home Affairs on April 29th, assures the Home Minister of the MLAs’ full cooperation in establishing peace once a new government is in place. The violence, which began in May 2023, has claimed over 250 lives and displaced thousands.
