Wed Apr 30 08:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Haryana Chief Minister Demands Release of Bhakra Reservoir Water Before Monsoon
**Chandigarh, India** – Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has urged the release of excess water currently stored in the Bhakra Nangal Dam before the monsoon season begins. He claims that this water, if not released, will flow into Pakistan, benefiting neither Punjab nor Haryana. This demand comes amidst the backdrop of stalled Indus Waters Treaty negotiations.
Khattar stated that emptying the reservoir by June is crucial to accommodate the upcoming monsoon rains. He highlighted that Haryana’s share of water released last month from the Bhakra dam management board was a mere 6,800 cusecs, significantly less than its entitlement. He further argued that even if Haryana received its rightful share, it would only constitute a minuscule 0.0001% of the total water stored in the dam.
The Chief Minister also appealed to the central government to divert water from rivers like Chenab and Jhelum to meet the agricultural needs of northern states. He expressed concern over the current situation, emphasizing the lack of cooperation from Punjab in releasing water to Haryana.
The Bhakra Nangal dam serves the water needs of Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan. The statement from the Haryana Chief Minister raises concerns about water allocation and cooperation among states during a time of potential water scarcity.
