Cambridge, MA – Harvard University is facing accusations of fostering a deeply polarized environment where students feel marginalized due to their identities and beliefs. Two separate task force reports released Tuesday reveal widespread anti-Semitism and Islamophobia on campus, leading to feelings of fear, isolation, and even physical threats among Jewish, Muslim, Arab, and Palestinian students.

Harvard President Alan Garber acknowledged the findings, stating that students reported being pushed “to the periphery of campus life” because of their identities or beliefs. Jewish students described hiding overt markers of their identity to avoid confrontation, while Muslim students reported facing verbal harassment, doxxing, and even physical assault. The reports cite instances of students being judged, misrepresented, and silenced for their views. One Israeli Arab student described experiencing social discrimination from their first day on campus.

The task force investigating anti-Semitism and anti-Israeli bias found that 26% of Jewish students felt physically unsafe, and 39% did not feel at home at Harvard. Nearly 60% reported experiencing discrimination due to their opinions, with only 25% believing they could express their views without academic or professional repercussions.

The task force examining anti-Muslim, anti-Arab, and anti-Palestinian bias revealed a similar climate of hostility, with nearly half of Muslim students and staff reporting feeling physically unsafe. 92% believed expressing their political views would result in professional or academic penalties.

President Garber emphasized the university’s commitment to fostering an environment of open inquiry and mutual respect. Both task forces have issued recommendations, including increased access to legal services, particularly to combat doxxing, and prioritizing the admission of students who support open inquiry. Harvard is reportedly redoubling its efforts to address these issues and create a more inclusive and welcoming campus climate. The university’s efforts come amidst an ongoing legal battle with the Trump administration over funding, a dispute partly fueled by allegations of rampant anti-Semitism on campus.
