Tue Apr 29 16:44:20 UTC 2025: ## France Accuses Russia of Decade-Long Cyberattacks

**Paris, France** – The French government has officially accused Russia’s military intelligence agency, the GRU, of carrying out a decade-long campaign of cyberattacks against French interests. The attacks, attributed to the GRU’s APT28 unit (also known as Fancy Bear), targeted a range of entities, including those involved in the 2024 Paris Olympics, Emmanuel Macron’s 2017 presidential campaign, and various sectors such as defense, finance, and economics.

The French Foreign Ministry released a statement and video on X (formerly Twitter) detailing the accusations. The video highlighted the 2017 attack on Macron’s campaign, where thousands of documents were leaked shortly before the election, and the targeting of a sports organization involved in the upcoming Olympics. APT28’s methods, which include targeting personal email accounts and manipulating public opinion, were also described.

This is not the first time APT28 has been implicated in major cyberattacks. The group is also linked to interference in the 2016 US presidential election and attacks on TV5 Monde in 2015. Furthermore, France is not the sole target; German authorities and others have warned of similar attacks against NATO countries and Ukraine. Poland, preparing for a presidential election, has also expressed concerns about potential Russian interference.

The timing of the announcement is significant, coming shortly before a planned friendship treaty signing between France and Poland on May 9th, the same day Russia will hold a large military parade. France stated its determination to counter Russia’s cyber activities with its allies.
