**New Delhi, April 26, 2025** – India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) announced a significant advancement in hypersonic technology yesterday. The DRDO successfully conducted a ground test of a long-duration Active Cooled Scramjet Subscale Combustor for over 1,000 seconds.
This surpasses a previous test in January 2025, which lasted 120 seconds. The successful test, conducted at the DRDO’s Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL) in Hyderabad, validates the design of the long-duration scramjet combustor and the testing facility itself. DRDO stated that the system is now poised for full-scale flight-worthy combustor testing.
Hypersonic cruise missiles, capable of traveling at speeds exceeding five times the speed of sound for extended periods, rely on air-breathing propulsion systems with supersonic combustion. This breakthrough significantly advances India’s capabilities in developing this crucial technology.
