**Jiuquan, China** – Three Chinese astronauts concluded a successful six-month mission aboard the Tiangong space station, returning to Earth on April 30, 2025. The Shenzhou-19 crew, consisting of Cai Xuzhe, Song Lingdong, and Wang Haoze, landed in Inner Mongolia after completing a mission that included setting a new record for the longest ever Chinese spacewalk.
The mission, part of China’s ambitious space program, saw the astronauts conduct various scientific experiments. Their return marks a significant step in China’s goal of becoming a leading space power, with plans for a crewed lunar mission by the end of the decade and the eventual construction of a lunar base.
The Shenzhou-19 crew’s return was initially scheduled for April 29th but was delayed due to inclement weather. State media reported the astronauts were in good health following their return. Footage showed their landing capsule descending under a parachute before a team of officials secured the craft and planted a Chinese flag.
The Shenzhou-20 mission, with a new crew, launched last week, taking over operations at the Tiangong space station. This mission will focus on further experiments in physics and life sciences, and for the first time, includes the use of planarians in space research. The Shenzhou-20 crew is led by veteran astronaut Chen Dong.
China’s space program continues to make strides, showcasing its growing capabilities and competing with the United States and Russia in the global space race. The Tiangong space station, independent of the International Space Station, is a key component of China’s independent space exploration efforts.
