Tue Apr 29 20:10:00 UTC 2025: **Vanderbilt Long Snapper Julian Ashby Drafted by New England Patriots**

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt University celebrated its special teams prowess on Saturday as long snapper Julian Ashby was selected by the New England Patriots in the seventh round (251st overall) of the 2025 NFL Draft. Ashby’s selection marks a significant achievement, as he’s the first Vanderbilt player drafted under head coach Clark Lea to have completed his eligibility at the university. He’s also the first Commodore drafted directly from Vandy since 2021.

Ashby, a standout performer with both Vanderbilt and Furman, becomes only the fourth Vanderbilt specialist ever drafted into the NFL, joining kicker John Markham (2001), Ricky Anderson (1985), and Jim Arnold (1983). His selection follows in the footsteps of former Commodore punter Matthew Hayball, who played for the New Orleans Saints in 2024. The last Vanderbilt player drafted by the Patriots was Joejuan Williams in 2019.

Ashby concluded his collegiate career with a stellar 2024 season, earning Academic All-American honors for the second time and executing 114 snaps in 13 games for the Commodores. His performance earned him third-team All-America recognition from Special Teams U and made him a semifinalist for the Patrick Mannelly Award. Prior to Vanderbilt, Ashby excelled at Furman, also achieving Academic All-American status.
