**Wellington, New Zealand – April 29, 2025** – Two moderate earthquakes struck off the west coast of New Zealand early this morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The first, a 6.2 magnitude quake, hit approximately 300 kilometers southwest of Invercargill at a depth of 10 kilometers. A second, stronger quake measuring 6.8 magnitude, occurred later in the Macquarie Island region, over 1,200 kilometers northeast of Invercargill. Both quakes occurred at relatively shallow depths.

New Zealand authorities reported the quakes as moderate, and there have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties. No tsunami warning was issued. New Zealand, situated on the “Ring of Fire,” experiences frequent seismic activity.
