LONDON – British prosecutors announced Tuesday that they will not file charges against a Sheffield Steelers hockey player arrested in connection with the on-ice death of Adam Johnson, a former NHL player, during a game in October 2023.
Johnson, 29, playing for the Nottingham Panthers, suffered a fatal neck injury from a skate slash during a game against the Steelers. A Steelers player was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter a month later.
Following a comprehensive police investigation, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) determined there was insufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction. “This was a shocking and deeply upsetting incident,” stated Michael Quinn, deputy chief crown prosecutor. “Following a thorough police investigation…we have concluded that there is not a realistic prospect of conviction.” The CPS expressed condolences to Johnson’s family and friends.
The arrested player has been released from bail. South Yorkshire Police Detective Chief Inspector Benjamin Wood described the investigation as “complex and extensive,” involving witness interviews, video review, and expert consultation. While the investigation is concluded, police also expressed sympathy for those affected by Johnson’s death.
The Panthers called the incident a “freak accident.” In response, the English Ice Hockey Association mandated neck guards for all players. Johnson, a former University of Minnesota and Pittsburgh Penguins player, was in his first season with the Panthers.
