**KOCHI, INDIA (April 29, 2025)** – The Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) are collaborating to prevent construction conflicts between the ongoing Kochi Metro expansion and a planned elevated highway. The projects’ paths intersect at the Palarivattom Bypass Junction.
KMRL has provided the NHAI with detailed plans for the Kochi Metro’s viaduct, which will cross the junction perpendicular to the National Highway 66 Bypass. The 60-meter span will be a 14-meter high open-web girder/truss structure, built 5.5 meters above the existing flyover. Pile caps will be located outside the NHAI’s right of way.
The NHAI, currently finalizing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the elevated highway, had previously requested revisions to account for the metro viaduct. A Bhopal-based consultancy firm is exploring optimal alignments for the six-lane elevated highway to accommodate both projects. The NHAI’s tentative plan involves building three-lane highways on either side of existing flyovers at Palarivattom, Vyttila, and Kundannoor.
KMRL has committed to providing further details, including construction timelines and methodologies, to ensure seamless integration of the two projects. Piling work for the Kochi Metro’s Kakkanad extension is already underway near the Palarivattom junction. The successful coordination between the two agencies aims to minimize disruptions during the construction phases.
