Mon Apr 28 22:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Mets Call Up Jose Urena to Replace Injured A.J. Minter

**New York, NY –** The New York Mets announced today that they have selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Jose Urena. Urena’s call-up comes as a result of left-hander A.J. Minter being placed on the 15-day injured list with a left lat strain. Minter left yesterday’s game with triceps soreness. No corresponding roster move was necessary as the Mets had an open 40-man roster spot.

Urena, 33, has a decade of Major League experience but has had inconsistent results throughout his career. While he enjoyed a solid two-year run as a starter for the Marlins from 2017-2018, he struggled in subsequent years with various teams, posting a cumulative 5.61 ERA and 5.29 FIP from 2021-2023.

However, Urena showed improvement with the Texas Rangers last season. Primarily used as a long reliever, he posted a 3.80 ERA and a particularly impressive 2.92 ERA in relief appearances. He attributed this success to increased fastball velocity and a lower walk rate, while maintaining his ground ball tendencies.

Despite his improved performance in Texas, Urena signed a minor league deal with the Mets this offseason. He remained with the Triple-A team until his call-up today. He is expected to fill a multi-inning relief role, with the possibility of serving as a sixth starter if needed.

The extent of Minter’s injury will be determined following imaging today. Until then, Danny Young is the only left-handed reliever on the Mets’ active roster.
