Tue Apr 29 16:19:32 UTC 2025: ## Death Row Inmate Acquitted in Mother’s Murder Case

**Chennai, April 29, 2025** – A man sentenced to death for the rape and murder of a minor girl has been acquitted in a separate case involving the murder of his mother. Daswant, a former IT professional, was originally convicted and sentenced to death for the 2017 rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl in Mugalivakkam. This sentence was upheld by the Madras High Court and the Supreme Court.

However, a Chengalpattu court acquitted Daswant on Tuesday in the murder case of his mother, Sarala. The court cited a lack of sufficient evidence, noting that the prosecution’s key witness, Daswant’s father, turned hostile.

Daswant was arrested for the minor’s murder after CCTV footage and other evidence implicated him. He was released on bail before his trial for the rape and murder began, only to later allegedly murder his mother and flee to Mumbai. He was subsequently apprehended and brought before the court for the separate murder charge.

While Daswant remains in Puzhal Central Prison for the rape and murder conviction, this acquittal represents a significant development in the ongoing legal proceedings against him.
