**Bengaluru, Karnataka, April 29, 2025** – In a significant administrative reshuffle, Tushar Giri Nath, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Chief Commissioner, has been transferred. Mr. Giri Nath, a 1993 batch IAS officer, will now serve as the Additional Chief Secretary to the Government, Urban Development Department, and concurrently, the Home Department. Importantly, he will retain his role as BBMP administrator, overseeing the establishment of the Greater Bengaluru Authority and its jurisdictional boundaries.
Replacing Mr. Giri Nath as BBMP Chief Commissioner is Maheshwar Rao M., a 1995 batch IAS officer, who will hold this position concurrently with his current role as Managing Director of the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). The government clarified that both the Administrator and Chief Commissioner positions are equivalent in rank to an Additional Chief Secretary.
Mr. Giri Nath’s tenure (since 2022) saw both successes and challenges. He successfully mitigated the impact of severe 2023 floods and implemented measures to reduce subsequent inundation. He also attempted to curb the proliferation of illegal banners and flexes, although the problem persists. However, his tenure was also marked by persistent criticism over the city’s poor road conditions and allegations of voter data theft involving an NGO, which resulted in a political controversy. The BBMP subsequently canceled the NGO’s survey permission. The transfer follows the impending retirement of current BBMP administrator Umashankar S.R. on April 30th.
