Tue Apr 29 13:59:16 UTC 2025: ## Bengaluru’s BBMP Criticized for Systemic Waste Management Failures

**Bengaluru, India (April 29, 2025)** – The Karnataka Lokayukta has severely reprimanded the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Bengaluru’s civic body, for widespread failures in solid waste management. Following a hearing on April 28th, the Lokayukta cited photographic evidence and suo motu complaints detailing numerous issues across several zones, including uncleared garbage piles, black spots, and a lack of adherence to waste segregation norms.

Senior BBMP officials, including Zonal and Joint Commissioners, appeared before Justice B.S. Patil, who expressed strong criticism of their performance. The Lokayukta ordered the BBMP to submit a detailed report outlining immediate improvements to waste disposal practices and demanded the elimination of all “black spots” before the next hearing.

The BBMP’s Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) pledged to address the shortcomings by increasing its engineering staff and procuring additional waste transport vehicles. The civic body also revealed that property tax stickers now include a waste management cess.

Specific concerns regarding garbage accumulation near Yeshwanthpur railway tracks prompted the Lokayukta to demand a joint status report from the BBMP and railway authorities. Furthermore, the Lokayukta instructed the BBMP to cease early morning garbage collection during peak traffic hours (“pink hours”) to alleviate public inconvenience. The Lokayukta emphasized the need for proactive measures and a significant improvement in the work ethic of BBMP officials.
