Tue Apr 29 16:22:43 UTC 2025: ## Karnataka Trade Unions to Protest Anti-Labor Policies

**Kalaburagi, Karnataka – April 29, 2025** – A district-level convention of the Joint Committee of Trade Unions (JCTU) will be held in Kalaburagi on May 4th, as a precursor to a nationwide protest on May 20th. The protest aims to oppose what the unions call anti-labor policies enacted by the BJP-led central government.

The convention, organized by four major trade unions – AIUTUC, AITUC, CITU, and INTUC – will address concerns about the impact of the four new labor codes, which consolidate 44 previous central labor laws. Union representatives criticized the codes, specifically the Code on Wages 2019, the Industrial Relations Code 2020, the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code 2020, and the Code on Social Security 2020, claiming they harm worker welfare.

The unions’ demands include implementation of the Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work (FPRW), halting privatization of public sector firms, ensuring minimum wages, abolishing the contract system, increased funding for education and healthcare, and a minimum pension of ₹6,000 for workers. The May 20th nationwide protest will build upon strategies developed at the Kalaburagi convention.
