**Sunrise, FL** – Tampa Bay Lightning winger Brandon Hagel will miss Game 3 of the Eastern Conference First Round against the Florida Panthers after receiving a one-game suspension from the NHL Department of Player Safety. The suspension stems from a forceful body check on Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov during Game 2 on Thursday.
The incident occurred midway through the third period with the Lightning on a power play. Barkov, having already lost possession of the puck, was hit by Hagel, resulting in a five-minute major penalty for interference. Barkov left the game and did not return, although he is expected to play in Game 3.
The NHL determined that Hagel’s hit, while not intentionally targeting the head, made sufficient head contact and was delivered with excessive force to an unsuspecting player who was not in possession of the puck. Hagel argued he anticipated Barkov would play the puck, but the Department of Player Safety stated he was responsible for ensuring the legality of the check.
This marks Hagel’s first suspension in his NHL career. The Lightning, who are down 2-0 in the series and struggling offensively, will be without a key offensive contributor in Game 3. Hagel recorded 35 goals and 55 assists during the regular season. The Panthers, meanwhile, will be hoping Barkov’s injury is not serious enough to keep him off the ice for Game 3.
