Mon Apr 28 19:41:18 UTC 2025: ## Chennai Metro’s Driverless Train Completes Successful Trial Run

**Chennai, April 29, 2025** – The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) successfully completed a trial run of its driverless train on a 10-kilometer stretch of Corridor 4, Phase 2, from Poonamallee to Porur Junction. The trial, which took place on Monday, saw the train navigate ten stations, drawing enthusiastic responses from onlookers.

While operated by an attendant during the trial, CMRL officials confirmed that operators will be present during initial passenger services, with roving attendants for a period afterward. The trial, following a previous run marred by technical issues, proceeded smoothly after overnight maintenance addressed concerns with overhead equipment.

The train ran at a speed of 15-20 kmph during Monday’s trial, lower than the anticipated 35 kmph average. Officials explained that the reduced speed was a precautionary measure for the initial run on the extended track. Higher speeds, up to 80 kmph, have been tested on shorter sections previously.

M. A. Siddique, CMRL managing director, announced that a trial run will commence on the second track (downline) from Porur to Poonamallee on May 30. Continuous testing on both tracks is planned for the next eight months. The CMRL aims to open the line by December, with a focus on initially launching services from Poonamallee to Vadapalani. However, Siddique acknowledged that this remains a challenging goal.
