**NEW DELHI, April 29, 2025** – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a scathing attack on the Indian National Congress (INC) Friday, accusing several prominent Congress leaders of undermining India’s response to the recent Pahalgam terror attack and providing fodder for anti-India propaganda by Pakistan.
The BJP cited comments made by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, several other state ministers and prominent Congress figures who questioned the victims’ testimonies regarding the terrorists’ actions, including claims that the terrorists had specifically targeted victims based on their religion. BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad highlighted these comments as “condemnable” and demanded answers from the Congress leadership. He specifically criticized Siddaramaiah’s statement that “war is not needed,” and Timmapur’s purported denial that the terrorists had asked about victims’ religion before shooting them. Prasad also condemned remarks by Robert Vadra and Mani Shankar Aiyar.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh responded by distancing the party from the individual comments, stating that the views expressed by these leaders were their own and did not reflect the official party position. He emphasized that the Congress Working Committee, party president Mallikarjun Kharge, and Lok Sabha leader Rahul Gandhi had clearly condemned the attack and supported the government’s actions. However, internal divisions within the Congress party were exposed when a public spat erupted between Shashi Tharoor and Udit Raj over differing views on the effectiveness of India’s intelligence capabilities.
The BJP also highlighted what it called the “apathy” shown by Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav toward a victim’s family and criticized Congress leader Saifuddin Soz’s comments suggesting that India should accept Pakistan’s denial of involvement in the attack.
The contrasting reactions highlight a deepening divide between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress on national security issues. The BJP stressed that while several international countries had publicly supported India’s stance, certain Congress leaders’ statements contradicted this global consensus and played into the hands of Pakistan.
