Tue Apr 29 04:32:02 UTC 2025: ## Karnataka Launches Hi-Tech Women’s Community Toilets to Improve Sanitation

**Bidar, Karnataka –** The Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Limited (KRIDL) is implementing a significant initiative to improve sanitation in rural areas of Bidar district. The project involves the construction of 60 hi-tech community toilet units exclusively for women, with a model unit already completed in Chatnalli village.

Each unit boasts 11 toilets (10 Indian-style and one Western-style for disabled individuals), a waste conversion system for fertilizer production, water and electricity supply, and an inverter for nighttime use. The ₹25 lakh (approximately $300,000 USD) per unit cost covers additional features such as washbasins and laundry platforms. The toilets are strategically located for safety and accessibility.

The initiative aims to address the risks associated with open defecation, including snakebites and drowning, as highlighted by a recent tragedy. The project also incorporates water supply connections through the Jal Jeevan Mission to ensure consistent functionality. Alongside the construction, the zilla panchayat is conducting awareness campaigns to encourage usage.

While the focus is on community toilets, the Bidar zilla panchayat has also received thousands of applications for individual toilet construction under the Swachh Bharat Mission, reflecting a broader commitment to improved sanitation in the region. The project’s success will be crucial in improving the health and safety of women in rural Karnataka.
