**Belagavi, Karnataka:** Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is facing intense criticism after a video surfaced showing him appearing to threaten a police officer during a Congress rally in Belagavi. The incident occurred after BJP workers allegedly displayed black flags at the event.
The video shows Siddaramaiah, visibly angry, confronting Dharwad Additional SP Narayana Baramani, questioning the officer’s failure to prevent the protest within the rally grounds. The Chief Minister’s raised hand appeared to be a gesture aimed at striking the officer, prompting Baramani to quickly retreat.
The incident has sparked outrage from opposition parties. The Janata Dal Secular (JDS) condemned Siddaramaiah’s actions on X (formerly Twitter), stating that “power is not permanent” and urging the Chief Minister to apologize.
The BJP has been particularly vocal in its condemnation. State spokesperson Vijay Prasad called the action a “disgrace of the highest order,” accusing Siddaramaiah of arrogance and contempt for institutions. Former Union Minister Basanagouda R Patil echoed these sentiments, demanding an unconditional apology. Both criticized the Chief Minister for demoralizing the police force.
While Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar issued a warning to the BJP over the black flag protest, threatening to retaliate against any future BJP events in Karnataka if similar incidents occur, the focus remains firmly on Siddaramaiah’s conduct.
This controversy comes on the heels of another involving Siddaramaiah’s comments on the need for war with Pakistan, remarks that were seized upon by the BJP following a recent terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir. Siddaramaiah has since clarified his stance, stating he didn’t advocate against war entirely, but rather suggested it should be a last resort.
